 ANGLERS MUST PROTECT
POSSIBLE RECORD FISH

If you catch a freshwater fish that looks like a new state record or world's record, protect it from immediate weight loss, say officials with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

Since ounces can mark the difference between an anglers's name in the record books or just catching another big fish," said Val Nash, chief of Freshwater Fisheries for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), "it is imperative to protect a catch from drying out or losing body weight. A new state freshwater record must break the former one by a margin of at least three ounces.

The first step in catching or confirming a record fish is to familiarize yourself with the current state records," Nash said. "If you suspect you may have a record fish, take immediate steps to preserve the fish by keeping it alive in a live well or on ice after lightly wetting the fish and wrapping it in a dark, plastic bag. Freezing is preferred, but rarely can an angler immediately freeze the suspected record breaker. As soon as a freezer is available, however, freeze the fish."

Protect the prize catch from the sun and heat until you can find state certified scales to officially record the weight. Certified scales may be found in most grocery stores or post offices. If possible, take a photograph of the fish while it is still fresh for further documentation.

For the state fish record's list two people at least 18 years old should witness the weighing of the fish. Witnesses will later need to sign a affidavit from the DNR so be sure to get their addresses and phone numbers.

If the weigh-in confirms that a state record has been broken, the angler can officially record the fish with the state DNR. A fisheries biologist will confirm the species and weight and provide a records affidavit that must be completed by the angler and returned to the DNR.

A fisheries biologist can be alerted by contacting Mike Creel or Beth Jennings Mason, at (803) 734-3952 in Columbia. This office is manned weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you catch a record fish outside of normal office hours, continue to keep the fish frozen to prevent any weight loss and notify the DNR as soon as possible.

The DNR in Columbia maintains all-tackle freshwater sportfishing records for 32 species: Striped Bass, White Bass, Hybrid Bass, White Perch, Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Redeye Bass, Bluegill (Bream), Shellcracker, Redbreast, Warmouth, Flier, Pumpkinseed, White Crappie, Black Crappie, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Sauger, Yellow Perch, Walleye, Chain Pickerel (Jackfish), Redfin Pike, Muskellunge, Blue Catfish, Bullhead, Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, White Catfish, Mudfish (Bowfin) and American Shad.

All state record fish must be caught by sporting means, using standard tackle or pole and line. Fish caught in nets and traps or on trotlines and set hooks are not eligible. Many long-standing fish records have been equaled or surpassed, but unsuspecting anglers neglected to document the fish as a record or failed to protect the fish from weight loss. Remember that fish begin to lose weight immediately after leaving the water.
