Eric at PERRY’S BAIT & TACKLE in Murrells Inlet stated the fishing has been good. With the water temperatures climbing into the 70's the fishing is really turning on for a variety of pelagic species. The Spanish mackerel and king mackerel are among the more popular species being landed by trolling cigar minnows, drifting or slow trolling live bait over the reefs. Bottom fish being taken over the reefs include black sea bass, sheepshead, red drum, black drum and porgy. Anglers interested in landing these species usually rely on a two-hook bottom rig with cut bait, squid, or live bait. The inshore flounder fishing has really taken off with some really nice catches being landed drift fishing live minnows. Also inshore the red drum are being caught around the jetties with a variety of live baits including minnows, crabs, and shrimp. The bluefish have begun to show up in numbers usually in the deeper channels taking minnows and cut bait. Also the sheepshead are really doing great out at our jetties with fiddler crabs being the bait of choice. If you plan on heading south to Georgetown the winter trout are also being reported on live shrimp. Along our local beaches the usual resident whiting and blue fish are being caught using shrimp, mullet, and squid. Also larger sharks are beginning to show up. Shark are going to be one of the largest fish you are going to catch with 150 lb fish being pulled in on our beaches. We have all the terminal tackle and large baitfish to set you up for surf casting for large sharks. Also remember that the world record tiger shark was caught off the Cherry Grove fishing pier reaching an enormous 1,780 lbs. We carry fresh whole mullet along with head on shrimp. Don't forget to check the rules and regulations for all shark species being kept. Just this year we have added Shiners, crappie minnows, and crickets for all our pond and river fishermen. Down at the waccamaw river the catfish are doing excellent using cut bait and worms. The local ponds have also reported the bass are really tearing into minnows and artificials, along with bream being hooked with worms and crickets. So come on down to Perrys and find out what, when, and where the fish are being caught. The most up to date and honest reports available right here just 1/2 mile north of the Murrells Inlet public boat landing. Don't forget to pick up your favorite local bait shops T-shirts now available.
