SANTEE GENERAL STORE (803-854-2105) located on HWY 6 in Santee is carrying live Herring, Threadfin shad and Gizzard shad and they hear the spring fishing on the lake has started up and folks have been getting some decent catches of fish. They have been seeing some good catfish coming in and the crappie fishing is picking up real well. The catfish have started to move up to shallow water biting worms, fresh cut bait, and live bait. The crappie should also move shallow this month, try fishing in 4 to 10 feet of water around some type of structure with minnows being the best bait. The largemouth bass fishing should also be good in the shallows using spinner baits and soft plastics. Shellcrackers and bream are hitting crickets and worms in shallow water. They report the crappies have moved into the creeks in shallower water and are being taken around brush piles using minnows. Catfishing on the Lakes continues to be good using guides or fishing the channels edges with live bait or worms during the day. Catfish are being caught in the shallows early and late in the day on live bait and fresh cut bait. The catfish are biting just off the bottom in 3 to 15 feet of water especially in the upper part of the canal and lower lake using live bait, fresh cut bait, or worms. Crappies are in 2 to 10 ft of water around brush and minnows seem to be the best bait. Bass are shallow and can be caught on plastic worm and lizards around lily pads or some type of cover. Bass should start to move into the 4 to 8 feet of water around the full moon. Shellcrackers are biting worms and a few bream are with them. Fishing will be great this month. The Catfish are really hungry and some nice ones are being caught on live bait and worms. The bream and shellcrackers are biting worms and crickets. The bass will go shallow around the trees and shallow brushpiles around the full moons for the next couple of months. They invite hunters and fishermen to come and stay with them. Stanley at JACK’S CREEK MARINA (803-478-2793) said a folks are coming in with some nice crappies. They have been catching crappie on both jigs and minnows. Shellcrackers are biting worms in the swamp area of the lake. If you are looking for a good place to catch some crappie and an occasional large shellcrackers try fishing minnows on the state crappie beds. Bass will really start to bite around the full moon in May, try spinnerbaits, plastic worms, lizards, and rattletraps. Catfishing continues to be good using worms or fresh cut bait.
