Fish'n & Hunt'n Reports

May 08

In early May we will still be catching Striped Bass in 10 to 30 feet of water says Capt. Randy of the BLUE HERON GUIDE SERVICE. Try double anchoring your boat and fishing cut bait on the bottom on main lake points. Free lined live bait fished along the shore line will work well especially early in the morning and at dusk. As the water temperature warms in the mid 70’s the Lake Murray Stripers will start to move out to deeper water, 30 to 50 feet, and can start to be caught by single anchoring your boat and fishing straight down in the classic Summer style. Use your sonar to locate schools of fish and fish that spot. Please be courteous and don’t get on top of the next person who’s trying to catch fish too. Give Capt. Randy a call and reserve a private fishing charter on Lake Murray for some great Striped Bass action!

The stripers are moving back down the river toward the dam reports Richard at LAKE WORLD located on Hwy 6 just across the dam in Lexington County. They are hitting good and should hit cut bait [herring or shad] in 4 to 20 feet of water fished off main lake points. Plenty of shellcrackers are being caught in 3 to 8 feet of water off the points around brush using blue worms. Crappie are still doing good on minnows and mini-jigs from the bank out to about 15 feet deep around brush and structure. Try top water baits like Sammy’s, buzz baits, and floating worms early and late in the day for bass around rocky points and around docks in the coves. Remember our Seventeenth Annual Striper Tournament is coming up in June, and we look forward to seeing you then.

Plenty of stripers were caught in April using live bait or cut bait fished right on the bottom, just above and below us here at SALUDA RIVER RESORT located off Hwy 121 west of Silver Street. Most of the stripers will be returning to the main lake this month and that should give the bream, crappie and catfishermen plenty of room to catch all the fish they want. We have rental units with kitchen efficiency and a three-bed room house for rent.

Make sure that you call early this month and schedule a guided striper fishing trip for you and a friend or business acquaintance reports BILL’S GUIDE SERVICE located in Newberry, fishing Congaree River and Lake Murray. He is a US Coast Guard Licensed Guide, and has a 22 foot Center Console Glassmaster boat with a T-top and custom electronics that is safe and comfortable for your fishing pleasure. The big stripers will be running back down to the middle of the lake during the month and should be hungry.

Some real good stripers will be caught in the rivers this month but they will start heading back down toward the big water during May reports George at GEORGE’S LIVE HERRING located at Macedonia Church Road just below Prosperity. He wants to remind you that he has plenty of live bait, and if you can, give him a call or pick them up at the bait house on Macedonia Church Road. During May, try live or cut bait off the main points in the river and lake and some good 10, 15 and 20 pounders may pull your string.
