The CHARLESTON ANGLER in Mt. Pleasant is located just off Hwy 17 in Towne Centre, next to the IHOP! The weather is hot and so is the fishing right now. Things should stay pretty consistent from now through the month of September. Fishing around the harbor has been picking up significantly as large numbers of menhaden have finally moved in. Lots of big redfish are being caught and released at the jetties and the grillage right now on live and cut menhaden. The tarpon are here in force, and we’ve heard some great reports of fish in the 70 to 140 lb range being caught at Dynamite Hole, the submerged north jetty, Cape Romain, Bulls Bay, Price’s Inlet, and Deveaux Bank. We’ve also been getting some reports of great flounder catches around the harbor and at the jetties using live mudminnows and Berkley Gulp shrimp. The trout fishing has been steady in the Cooper, Ashley, Wando, and Stono Rivers as well as the feeder creeks. Live shrimp fished under a popping cork is the way to go right now, and there are plenty of bait-sized shrimp in the creeks right now. If you don’t want to waste valuable fishing time catching bait, we are now selling live shrimp in our Mt. Pleasant store in addition to mud minnows. For those who like tossing artificials, hit the water early and try tossing topwater plugs like the Skitter Walk or Super Spook, grubs on light jigheads, or soft plastic jerkbaits. Nearshore and offshore, there are plenty of kings around right now everywhere from the shipping channel out to 100’ of water over live bottom. Slow trolled live menhaden, cigar minnows, and blue runners are doing the trick for the kings; make sure to fish 1 or 2 baits down deep on downriggers, as the water on the surface is very hot right now. A few cobia are being taken on the artificial reefs and wrecks on live bait as well. Further offshore, the sailfish bite has been good in 150 to 300’ of water and should improve even more as we move into September.
