Captain Randy Saliga of the BLUE HERON GUIDE SERVICE states in January striped bass in Lake Murray will be caught from the Big Gap all the way up past the Saluda River Resort and above Little River Marina. Other than chasing Seagulls that indicate schooling Striped Bass, try free lining live bait, trolling small spoons, jigs, crankbaits, and bucktails. Anchoring in the bends of the Saluda River and bottom fishing cut bait will produce some good size stripers. Capt. Richard at LAKE WORLD located on Hwy 6 just across the dam in Lexington County states the striper fishing is good to excellent in the Crystal Lake, Big Hollow, and in the upper rivers. Try free-lining or down lines to 30 feet and watch for feeding fish and diving birds. Richard says crappie fishing is good in the upper part of the lake using small to medium minnows around brush or slow trolling jigs fished 10 feet deep in the mouths of the creeks. Some bass are being caught on jigging spoons, Pig and Jig, or deep running crankbaits fished off the deeper rocky points. Catfishing is good on the bottom in twenty foot of water using cut herring. NEW ON LAKE MURRAY is WEED’S LANDING MARINE & OUTDOORS on Hwy. 378 at the Twin Bridges. They offer many services including Boat and ATV sales and service. They have a newly stocked tackle shop with plenty of lures for the bass fishermen. They also sell crickets and worms for the bream, shellcracker and catfishermen. Because of the cold weather they suggest you fish on the warmer days. Most of the crappie are being caught in the Black Bridge area of Lake Murray using minnow in 12 to 14 foot of water fishing 8 foot down. Also the stripers are in the upper part of the lake (the elbow area). They should be found schooling where the gulls are diving. Also the can be caught on live herring fished off rocky points.

SALUDA RIVER RESORT located off Hwy 121 west of Silver Street has camping space available. Also, there is some excellent duck hunting in this area. Striper fishing is good to excellent at this time in the upper part of the lake and in the river free lining herring or casting bucktails and Lil Fishies to feeding fish. Crappie are being caught while drifting small minnows or slow trolling mini-jigs. Good catfish are coming in while fishing cut bait and night crawlers on the bottom in the river.

There have been only a few Saturday’s in the last 16 years that he has not been on the water fishing. RIVERWINDS LANDING is a marina on the north side of Black’s Bridge on the upper part of Lake Murray located at 221 SC Hwy 391, Prosperity. The facility has a launch ramp, 6 rental cabins, dry storage, wet slips, a covered cabana, picnic area, and a marina store. The store is stocked with all necessary boating and fishing supplies, beer, bait, ice and a complete line of crappie jigs (an entire wall) and tackle. There are snacks, cold sandwiches, hotdogs, barbecue sandwiches, cold drinks and hot coffee and a spacious pub. Some of the local customers are duck hunting early and late in the day and striper or crappie fishing during the day. In January the stripers should be in this section of the river. They are only three minutes from Lake Murray Marina. Peter has been selling plenty of striper fishing supplies and has been hearing stripers being caught in the upper part of Lake Murray freelining herring and casting bucktails and shad baits to the schools. Just look for the gulls and you will find the schooling fish. He is also selling plenty of Berry jigging spoons and hearing that they are catching white perch, bass and stripers off the points where there is bait concentrations. Some big catfish can be caught on the bottom off points and in creek runs using cut bait.

In Ballentine at ANGLER’S SOUTH INC. they stated that the stripers have moved into the middle to upper part of the lake. They are being caught on live herring, jigging or casting to feeding stripers where the gulls are diving. Catfishing continues to be good using cut bait and worms on the bottom in the mouths of the coves. The crappie are in the coves and can be caught on minnows fished around brush piles. The bass should be caught on the warmer days on crankbaits, jigs and spinner baits in the coves around structure like brush and docks.

From BUFFALO CREEK MARINA we heard the stripers have moved into the Buffalo Creek area of Lake Murray. They normally stay through March. Remember you can put your boat in the lake at their fully renovated boat ramp for only $2. Also they have some fishing cabins starting at $80 a night including tax.
