Fish'n & Hunt'n Report

Jan. 09

Some big stripers have been caught recently in the river from the 378 bridge south using live and cut herring right off the main creek runs reports PALMETTO ANGLER on Hwy. 278 West. Also, fishermen report catching striper/hybrids in SC Little River and Soap Creek. Jug catfishermen are having good success recently. They have live herring and invite you to stop by anytime you are fishing. They also have plenty of minnows and worms available. Fishing tackle, live bait tanks and accessories are also available for your convenience. Captain Evan Williams Striper guide service is available through the store.

88 MART reports that some hybrid /striper can be caught fishing live herring 30 to 40 feet deep mainly early or late in the day. You can also fish cut bait from the bank near the dam and in the Parksville area, and catch some really nice catfish. 88 MART is located on Hwy 28 only a few miles from the dam. They have a full service kitchen with Hunt Brother Pizzas, live bait including blueback herring, beer, gas, ATM, snacks and much more.

HOOTIE’S FISHING & HUNTING stated most of their customers are deer hunting till the end of December. They invite you to come join their archery shooting leagues for both adults and kids. This is good family fun facility. They have “Mathews, PSE & Bow Tech Bows” and full line of “Archery Supplies.” They have 90 days same as cash. They also offer bow repairs, bow tuning and service. On the fishing side, late December and January is a great time to go to Clarks Hill, (take caution because of the low water) except when a cold front is coming through the area, and catch hybrids and striper pulling planer boards with live herring. Some big bass can be caught on the warmer days slow cranking crankbaits and spinner baits in the coves. They have the largest selection of Sebile swim baits in the state and a great selection of Lucky Craft, Bass Magic swim baits, Buck eye mop jigs, Spot Removers and Carrot Stick rods.

Our customers have done great taking deer in the local area reports DEERFEATHERS STORE AND CAMPGROUND, located on Hwy 283, five miles east of Plum Branch. Deer season ends in December, but most of our customers keep their campers in the area year-round for the upcoming squirrel, duck, rabbit, spring turkey season and the spring fishing season. As always, we have good hot dogs and barbecue sandwiches, along with snacks, groceries, drinks, gas, beer, and a game room. Check out our walls of game taken over the last eleven years. Stop by and find out who won the big Buck and big doe contest. Burl will also be glad to tell you who would have won these contest if they would have entered.

CAPTAIN TOMMY DUDLEY is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed full service striper and hybrid guide on Clarks Hill/Thurmond lake. Tommy told us the striper/hybrid fishing will decline in numbers but there will be bigger fish. The big fish should be found in the back to mid sections of the major creek channels. The fish will be caught on live herring pulled behind planer boards in two to ten foot of water. Overcast, cloudy days are great, but major cold fronts should be avoided. Hybrids will still be caught on down lines near tree lines at major creek junctions.

B&E GROCERY & CAMPGROUND is located half way between Abbeville & McCormick. Lucy and Willy have good hot food in the snack bar, and on Saturday from noon to 2 pm, a buffet. They have camping sites available in the campground. They also have weekend campers for rent. They have a good selection of hardware and parts for repairing campers, trailers or anything else, which needs fixing. Fishing is good on the warmer days on Clarks Hill and Lake Russell, so stop by get some live bait and go catch you a cooler full of crappie, catfish, stripers or hybrids. THIS STORE IS FOR SALE!

Near I-20 on Hwy. 1 in Aiken at OUTDOORS UNLIMITED they tell us most of their customers were out deer hunting in December and will be duck hunting in January. On the fishing they are still hearing that at Clarks Hill stripers and hybrids are being caught pulling planer boards and on free lines in deep water or in back creeks. Also some crappie are being caught trolling mini-jigs or drifting minnows in the mouths of the creeks.

NUMBER ONE MARKET BAIT & TACKLE located in the Clearwater area of North Augusta is stocked up with all types of fishing tackle for the bream, crappie, striper, bass and catfishermen. Dean suggests you stop by the store and check out the spinners, which he is custom making for catching big shellcrackers in the Savannah River and see the beautiful mount of shellcrackers caught in previous years. Dean is hearing that crappie are being caught in the local creeks and ponds using minnows. On Clark Hills Dean is hearing that the water is very low. Stripers are being caught pulling planer boards and on free lines in deep water or in back creeks

In Aiken on Hwy. 1 at NORTHSIDE BAIT & TACKLE Lindsey stated that he has been selling plenty tuffy minnows that are being used to catch crappie in the local ponds and rivers. Now is the time to take a kid fishing and catch crappie in the local ponds on the warmer days. Stop by the store for all types of live bait and check out the huge selection of slider crappie jigs.
Over in Belvedere at QWICKIE JACK’S they have been busy selling minnows and have heard of good reports of crappie being caught in the local ponds and rivers on the warmer days. This is a great place to stop and get your live bait and beverages before you go fishing. Remember Take a Kid Fishing!

The fish are biting and the weather is great except when a cold front is moving through the area, so come see us at CLIATT CROSSING located only a few miles pass the Lincolnton Bridge at the intersection of Hwy 43 and Hwy 220! We have diesel gas, hot food, ATM, large bait and tackle selection and more. Fishing is good in our area of the lake with most of the hybrid/stripers being caught on live herring fished off points in the main river channel in twenty- four to thirty foot of water.
